Square? Or freeform? (Ruby Stained Glass Notes #03)

I started working on the drawing
My main goal this week was to start working on preparatory drawings.
There’s a world between a screenshot and a drawing that works as a potential stained glass piece. And, as I like to say, “building is thinking.” I use this a lot when talking about software, but I find it to be true for art too.
So I sat at my living room table and started riffing on the design.
I’m working on working with my garage door up, and since I find it hard to convey the act of drawing in words, I recorded a video.
Am I becoming a Youtuber or what?
I spent most of my Friday morning recording a handful of clips of myself drawing and thinking out loud about the project. There’s even a 3-minute chapter of ASMR-type of me just drawing with watercolours.
I’m no videographer, so bear with my limited skills!
If you video is not your jam, the TL;DR is that I have some opinion about the overall shape of the panel.
Square or freeform?
One of the main takeaways from my drawing session was that I realized I like the freeform stained glass panel better than the square one. I find the square-shaped panel to be a tad boring. The freeform, on the other hand: 🤌
I can see it popping up on a desk or in my window.
Here are the two versions of the drawing (with some hand-drawn mock-ups on my phone). Which one do you like best?
I think I’ll build one test panel for each version and ask for a vote. I don’t plan on building two different panels, so ~I~ we will have to choose.
